Art Van Elslander opened his first furniture store in 1959. The 4,000 square-foot facility, located on Gratiot in East Detroit, featured Danish contemporary furniture and employed only its owner.

The first Art Van store opened with the philosophy that is still the foundation of the company today provide area residents with quality furniture, at great prices, while offering high standards of service.

This additional space allowed him to have more furniture on hand, allowing better guest service with immediate deliveries. In 1973, the Warren store was relocated from 12 Mile Road and Van Dyke to 14 Mile Road and Mound to accomodate the company’s headquarters and a new, larger warehouse.

Company headquarters remains at that same location today. Art Van Furniture first entered markets outside of Metro Detroit in 1977 with stores in Flint and Lansing. Locations in Saginaw, Kalamazoo, Muskegon, Battle Creek, Holland, Ann Arbor, Port Huron, Jackson, Howell and Traverse City soon followed.

As the store count increased, so did the company’s warehouse facility and services. The increased warehouse space allowed the company to buy in larger quantities at greater savings.

The menu of guest services grew over the years to include Free Immediate Delivery, Free One Year Service Warranty, 30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee - a no questions asked policy that allows guests to return or exchange their purchase if not completely satisifed, 30 Day Low Price Guarantee, Mattress Express with guaranteed free next day delivery of the mattress purchase or it’s free, and more.

In addition to the company’s retail and guest services, Art Van has a long-standing commitment to the communities in which we operate. America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Holland Tulip Festival, the National Cherry Festival and America’s Walk for Diabetes are a few of those programs.

Today, Art Van Furniture operates 30 stores in 26 cities throughout Michigan and remains family-owned. We employ over 3000 associates and operate over 400 delivery and service vehicles. Art Van ranks as the number one furniture retailer in Michigan and among the top ten of the leading 100 U.S. Furniture Stores ranked by Furniture Today magazine.
