Flat-pack homes are to spring up on Tyneside in a UK first. Swedish furniture store Ikea was given outline planning permission to build the unique homes.

Gates head councilors have just given the go-ahead for the revolutionary affordable housing. The Scandinavian-style timber-framed houses and flats are designed by Swedish construction firm Skanska in partnership with Ikea.

Members of Gateshead Council’s planning and development committee gave permission to property company Live for the development of 117 houses and flats close to Gateshead International Stadium.

BoKlok was designed in the mid-1990s to tackle the need for affordable properties in Sweden and to provide people with high-quality properties at a low price. Work on the first phase of 36 flats in six two-storey blocks will begin this spring, with the first flats being marketed in Ikea’s MetroCentre store in the autumn.
